How to Identify Unknown Calls
An unfamiliar number does not automatically mean a call is dangerous. The goal is to assess the situation without exposing your personal information or trusting an unverified caller.
1. Let unexpected calls go to voicemail
A legitimate caller may leave a message with enough context for you to verify the request. Be cautious with urgent threats, pressure to pay immediately, or requests for authentication codes.
2. Verify the organization independently
If the caller claims to be from a bank, delivery company, government agency, or other organization, find its contact details from an official source. Do not rely only on the number shown in caller ID or a number provided during the call.
3. Search carefully
You can search the number online or consider a reverse phone lookup service. Check whether information is current and whether the source explains its limitations. A search result can be wrong, incomplete, or tied to a previous number owner.
4. Protect personal information
Do not provide passwords, one-time verification codes, financial details, or identity documents to an unexpected caller. Avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages until you have independently verified the sender.
5. Block or report suspicious contact
Use your phone's blocking tools or contact your carrier to learn about call-filtering options. If you believe you have encountered fraud, report it through the appropriate official channel in your country.
Remember
Phone lookup is only one source of context. Caller ID spoofing means the displayed number may not identify the true caller. When in doubt, end the call and contact the organization through a trusted channel.
